A project of the Columbia, Missouri Branch, American Association of University Women

This volume publishes thirty biographies of important Missouri women. Designed to enrich the teaching of Missouri history at fourth-grade level, each biography includes a two-page biographical sketch, an illustration of each woman, a small location map of Missouri, a timeline, and printed and online references for further reading. The women featured represent diverse groups: artists, athletes, business women, doctors, educators, philanthropists, public servants, writers, etc. They are of various races and come from different backgrounds and time periods.

Begun as a pilot project in 2004 with Eugene Field Elementary School in Columbia, Missouri, the volume first included ten biographies and was given to the two Field school fourth grades and the media center. In 2005, an additional ten biographies were written and ten more in 2006. A grant from the Columbia Public Schools Foundation enabled the volume to be distributed to all fourth grade classrooms in Columbia and to all media centers in the elementary schools. Grants from the Richard S. Brownlee Fund of The State Historical Society, Women’s and Gender Studies, University of Missouri-Columbia, and the Ten-Ten Foundation, Kansas City, Missouri, also supported the project. Notable Women of Missouri is an extension of the Missouri AAUW publication Show Me Missouri Women, 1989 and 1993. These two volumes included famous Missourians from all walks of life.
